  • Official photo ID or a power of attorney (for representation)

a new paper registration certificate free of charge. A fee of €28.10 is charged for issuing a duplicate check card license.

If you lost your number plate, please immediately report the loss to the police. You will then get the following documents and for a fee new license plate:

  • Type certificate or individual approval or certificate of conformity or EGB data excerpt from the approval database
  • Registration Certificate
  • Test report
  • possibly existing second number plate
  • Police report confirmation
  • IDs or power of attorney

When registering a vehicle, you can decide for yourself whether you would like to receive the registration certificate as a paper document or in a practical credit card format.

If you choose the credit card format, this costs an additional €28.10. The card will be sent to you by post after you have applied for it. Until then, you will receive a provisional paper registration certificate from the registration office.

PS: You can also exchange an existing paper registration certificate for a card at a registration office. The costs are the same as for a new issue.

Anyone can have a personal number plate, as long as the desired combination has not yet been assigned. It always consists of the following elements:
  • The letter of the registration authority (of the principal place of residence or place of business).
  • the state coat of arms
  • Depending on the license plate, 3-6 freely selectable characters that must begin with a letter and end with a number.

After checking whether the desired number plate is still available, the number plate is reserved/applied for at the responsible registration authority.

The costs for a custom license plate are made up as follows:
  • € 200.00 - donation to the Austrian Road Safety Fund
  • €14.00 - administration fee
  • €14.30 – application fee
  • € 23.00 – production
What else is there to consider?
  • A personalized number plate is valid for 15 years from the date of reservation/application and can be extended from 6 months before it expires. Otherwise it automatically loses its validity.
  • Reservations that are not taken will expire after 5 years.
  • A custom license plate cannot be transferred.
  • If you do not want to renew the old optional license plate when the deadline expires and you do not want to apply for a different optional license plate, you must exchange the optional license plate for a normal license plate.
  • If you don't want the number plate you want, you only have to pay the fees for the new standard number plate.
In Austria, interchangeable license plates can be issued for up to 3 vehicles, provided the following conditions are met:
  • Each vehicle must be registered separately and a registration certificate is issued for each vehicle.
  • The vehicles must belong to the same upper group (car, motorcycle,...).
  • The license plate must be able to be used for all vehicles (regarding format).
  • The license plate may only be used on one of the approved vehicles at a time. Vehicles without license plates may not be parked on public traffic areas.

Cost
Additional costs apply for registering an additional vehicle with an existing license plate. The amount of these costs are individual and please ask your admissions office. Motor vehicle liability insurance, on the other hand, is only payable for one vehicle and is calculated based on the vehicle with the highest horsepower.

If an exchangeable number plate is assigned by the authorities, the premium assessment is based on the position of the vehicle with the highest premium. If several vehicles that are subject to the engine-related insurance tax are registered under a variable number plate, the engine-related insurance tax only has to be paid for the vehicle that has the highest tax burden.

Required documents for registering a variable number plate:
  • Official photo identification or power of attorney
  • Vehicle documents
  • Registration certificate of all vehicles
  • Sale or lease agreement
  • Insurance confirmation

You have moved or changed your name? This may also be relevant for your vehicle registration.

Authority abbreviation remains the same
If the authority abbreviation in the license plate (e.g. "W") remains the same when moving, nothing has to be done regarding the vehicle registration. This therefore also applies to a move within Vienna (e.g. from the 3rd to the 10th district). The change in the registration record is done in the background by the registration office. The registration certificate with the old data remains still valid.

Authority abbreviation changes, authority remains the same
If the authority abbreviation in the license plate changes due to a move, but the same (registration) authority is still responsible, the change must be reported

Required documents:
  • License plate number
  • Vehicle documents
  • Registration certificate

Authority abbreviation and authority change
If the authority abbreviation in the license plate changes due to a move and a different authority is responsible for the new main residence, a de-registration and a new registration of the vehicle must be done.
